How to play Minesweeper?

Minesweeper is a classic logic game with a simple goal: clear a grid without setting off the hidden mines. This online version of Minesweeper is accessible directly from your browser, with no download or registration.
To make progress, you have to rely on logic and on analysing the numbers.

The basic controls

Left-click opens a square. If the square is empty, it reveals a number or a blank space. If you click on a mine, you lose and the game ends.
Right-click is used to place a flag. Use it to mark the squares you suspect contain a mine.

Understanding the clues and the numbers

Each uncovered square shows a number from 1 to 8. This number tells you exactly how many mines are in the 8 adjacent squares (horizontally, vertically and diagonally).
By cross-referencing these different visual clues, you'll be able to deduce which squares are completely safe and which ones should be locked with a flag.

Interface and game modes

To track your progress, two counters frame the grid:

  • On the left: the number of mines left to identify.
  • On the right: a timer to gauge your speed and track your personal records.

The game adapts to your level with three standard modes: Beginner, Intermediate and Expert, which offer increasingly large grids, ever denser with traps. New challenges are also available via the More tab, to be unlocked as you win.
